Worldwide, Christmas is a very special time of the year. Fiji is no exception. Though small this island nation may be, it includes several of the world's major religious groupings - Christians, Hindus, Muslims, as well as many minor groupings. While Christmas is primarily a Christian celebration, Muslims are aware of its significance; Hindus and the others are caught up in the atmosphere of celebration that characterises this time of the year.
The 1997 stamps focus on the essential element of Christmas - the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Post Fiji celebrates the occasion with a set of four stamps issued on 18th November 1997. The designs are as follows:
| 13 cents - Angelic announcement of the birth to the shepherds
The artist has depicted a single angel and a single shepherd, to represent the angelic choir which announced to the group of shepherds that a child had been born in nearby Bethlehem; a child whose birth heralded the most momentous event in human history - the Son of God becoming man. |
|
| 31 cents - The birth of Jesus
Joseph and Mary contemplate the newly born child whose birth in a stable has indicated that from His very entry into this world, His life was to be lowly and humble. The king of Heaven began His human life in an animal shelter. |
|
| 87 cents - The coming of the Wise Men
Jesus' coming amongst us was not meant to be for the Jews only; He and His message is for all peoples. Guided by their own studies and assisted by a heavenly star, the Wise men sought and found this child who was destined to touch the lives of the gentiles as well as the Jews. |
|
| $3 - Mary and the Infant Jesus
Jesus was no ordinary baby. Many things are said in Matthew and Luke's birth narratives about this child. It would only be much later that Mary would understand the role her newborn baby would play in the lives of people. |
