2008 OLYMPIC GAMES COMMEMORATIVE STAMP:

The XXIX Olympic Games will be hosted by Beijing, China where over 15, 000 athletes and officials from 205 countries will compete in 28 sports from 8th - 24th August, 2008.

Fiji has participated in the Olympic Games since 1956 in Melbourne where it was represented by a team of 4 athletes and 2 of ficials. Since then, the size of TEAM FIJI has grown as more athletes aspire to fly the flag for Fiji at the Olympic Games.

The Fiji Association of Sports & National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) since becoming a member of the International Olympic Committee in 1955, has been represented at all Summer Olympic Games (except Moscow in 1980). Fiji also participated in the 1988 and 1996 Winter Olympic Games and at the 1996,2000 and 2004 Paralympic Games.

To commemorate Fiji's participation at the 2008 Olympic Games, the Fiji Philatelic Bureau will release a set of four (4) stamps that will be available at Post Fiji outlets throughout Fiji.

ATHLETICS (20c)

Athletics was the first sport in Fiji to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games. Makelesi Bulikiobo Batimala raised the standard for women's athletics in Fiji by being the first female athlete to qualify on her own merit for the track events at the Beijing Olympics.

JUDO (65c)

Despite being a minor sport, Judo has a huge following in Fiji. Judo has been represented at the Olympic Games since 1984 and the Beijing Games will feature 2002 Commonwealth Bronze medalist, Sisiiia Naisiga Rasokisoki in the women's competition in Beijing.


SHOOTING (90c)

Shooting is a relatively new sport to Fiji but our athletes have made a huge impact in regional and international competition. Shooter Glenn Kable made Fiji's first appearance at an Olympic Shooting event at the 2004 Athens Olympic Gamest.

SWIMMING ($1.50)

Fiji was first represented in Swimming at the 1984 Olympic Games and Fiji swimmers have proudly represented their country at each successive Olympic Games.
