Birds are Fiji's most conspicuous wildlife and are a key component of the nation's natural heritage. Although small in number, the avifauna abounds with interesting species. They range from the Kula with cultural significance, to the Silktail which is of special scientific interest.
Important still are those birds which give us joy everyday by their very presence. Approximately one third of Fiji's land birds are endemic - being found nowhere else in the world.
Some are rarely seen by casual observers because they are confined to forests and are never seen in open areas. To commemorate Fiji's participation in the Singapore '97 Stamp Exhibition, Post Fiji released a souvenir sheet featuring a bird of Fiji.

Black faced shrikebill (Cyctorhynchus nigrogularis)
In Fiji, the rare Black faced shrikebill is restricted to forests on the islands of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Kadavu and Ovalau. It is one species which appears to have been badly affected by widespread logging over the last two decades. |
